GUI and CUI

The user interface can be graphic-based which is called GUI and it can be character-based called CUI, below are the key differences between the two. GUI and CUI are vital part of HCI.

Graphic User Interface :

  • GUI refer to graphical user interface
  • GUI is a higher fidelity experience hence higher space complexity along with higher time complexity, the task will require pointing device movement across the 2D matrix.
  • GUI is highly simplified to render intuitive, simpler, and smoother UX.
  • GUI is very user-friendly.
  • Multi-tasking is carried out efficiently and smoothly in GUI-based setup.
  • I/O format will be pointing devices, typing devices, audio drivers, and video drivers.
  • GUI provides a user interface that is rendered via graphical computing.
  • All modern-day applications which are RETAIL and BUSINESS CENTRIC have GUI-based UX.
  • The speed of the GUI interface is lower.
  • Navigation and UI travel is easier (2D and 3D MOTION)

Character User Interface :

  • CUI refers to the character user interface.
  • CUI is a low fidelity based experience hence lower space complexity.
  • CUI is complex and not designed for simplified usage.
  • CUI is not user-friendly.
  • Single Task-oriented.
  • I/O usage is keyboard-based
  • In the character user interface, only scripts and commas are leveraged.
  • CUI-based interface is for specialized operations.
  • The speed of CUI is higher.
  • Navigation is difficult due to its sequential nature. (1D MOTION)

Cmd is CUI and any application on the web and mobile is GUI, both are leveraged to satisfy specific use cases.
